Kalimera! Arché Travel arrives in Greece!
We wake up early and leave Athens after a breakfast with coffee, fresh orange juice and the due recommendations of Greek mothers about the streets to take…direction: the mitical region of Peloponnese!
A nice sun follows us along the trip. Leaving the region of Attica we cross the Corinth Canal, 23 meters wide, designed and built by the Romans only towards the end of the nineteenth century to allow boats to sail from Italy to the Aegean Sea, avoiding to circumnavigate the Peloponnese.
We dive into the magnificent scenery, the mountains overlooking the sea on a postcard and scenic roads lead us to Epidaurus. We visit the archaeological site with its magnificent theater that can accommodate 14,000 people and is still used during the summer shows. Now we are alone, the scene is ours, so we have fun testing its perfect acoustics!
We reach Nafplio, a delightful medieval architecture town situated in a strategic position on the sea with a view of the Gulf and the mountains. 999 steps lead up to the historic center of Palamidi Fortress which is located on the city, the demanding walk gives us a fantastic view!
Inspired by Homer, between history and legend, we go up to Mycenae to see the ancient archaeological site with the massive Cyclopean walls, the Lions Gate and the Treasury of Atreus. We visit the site quickly because during the winter the archaeological sites close at 3, but we can fully appreciate the historical and archaeological treasures of these places, even more if we are the only visitors!
Driving south along the entire regione is evident the beauty of this area. Olive and orange trees and fields of flowers color the landscape of yellow, white and purple: just in few places in the world nature has been so good … The road is long but we finally arrive by the evening in Monemvasia where we are welcomed by a friendly old woman named Voula. We are exhausted and we only have time to exchange a few words with her eating a fantastic homemade cake before falling asleep in an enchanted silence, kalinixta and tomorrow!
